ANTIGUA – With a different beach for every day of the year, Antigua is perhaps one of the few places in the world that enjoys a consistently warm enough climate to encourage all year round swimming. With low humidity and year round temperatures of between 24-30 degrees C, the island is kept in perfect balance by the tropical sunshine tempered by the cooling trade winds.. The Antiguan people are justly proud of their history and ancestry. Visit the village of Nelsons dockyard, with its delightful buildings and original Nelsonian Naval buildings. The plant life is really quiet stunning: papayas, mangoes and guavas grow beneath the flamboyant hibiscus, jacaranda and brightly coloured bougainvillea. Beaches The coast is entirely reef protected making it ideal for snorkelling, scuba diving, sailing, windsurfing, water skiing, para gliding and sport fishing. For those looking for a little more relaxation, there are plenty of quiet, secluded beaches where the only sound is the gentle lapping sea and the hypnotic swishing of the palm trees. With 365 beaches to choose from, you wont be disappointed and don’t have to travel far to find one that suits you! Here are some of our favourites: Crab Hill beach. On exceptionally clear days, the Island of Montserrat can be seen on the horizon while other beaches good for snorkeling include: Darkwood beach, Carlisle Bay beach, Fryes beach, Half Moon Bay beach (with it’s fine pink sand!), Turners beach and Occidental Grand Pineapple Beach. Pigeon's Point beach should also be visited! Restaurants Antigua hosts a great variety of restaurants, bars and nightly entertainment. Dining out in Antigua is about local snackettes (that mainly do lunch) or Fine Dining with a smattering of in between. The variety of the foods and cuisines available in the town is diverse and opens up opportunities for great new experiences of all kinds. Antigua’s speciality is a combination of African traditions adapted to the ingredients of the region. Favourite dishes include duccana and saltfish, which is a mixture of grated sweet potato, coconut and cornmeal flavoured with spices and steamed in banana leaf. It is served with a saltfish stew which has a tomato and onion base. The national dish is fungi and pepperpot. Fungi is a polenta type paste made with cornmeal and okra which is then cooked in a ball. Pepperpot is a type of stew that includes a small mountain of ground provisions such as yam, eddoe, pumpkin, green fig, plantain (both types of banana), sweet potato, dasheen leaves (not unlike spinach) into which they add salt pork and beef. It makes a hearty casserole which is also highly seasoned. Another favourite stew is goat water, which is made with goat and is spiced with hot peppers, clove and even cinnamon. Leisure The islanders are fanatical about playing, watching, listening to and especially talking about Cricket. For the sports minded there are excellent facilities for golf, tennis, squash and horse riding, ramblers will find many magnificent walks waiting to be discovered. Sight seeing Take an excursion to Great Bird Island from Dickenson Bay. Glass-bottomed boats afford leisurely views of the reef, and a restored pirate ship sails around the island and takes passengers for day or evening trips, with food, drink and entertainment included. St John’s Cathedral, originally built in 1683, has been destroyed and rebuilt a number of times. Today’s building dates from 1845. Take a walk through Indian Town national park, at the northeastern point of the island. Breakers crashing in with the full force of the Atlantic behind them have carved Devil’s Bridge and created blow-holes with foaming surf. Visit Half Moon Bay with it’s National Park and also nearby the protected reef of Long Bay. Visit the less-developed island of Barbuda for its wild beauty and deserted beaches. The Frigate Bird Sanctuary, home to over 5,000 frigate birds, is also here. |
