back to the 14th Century the famous San
Juan Fiesta is an elaborate festival of the islands
Equestrian masters and thoroughbred horses parading
through the streets of Ciutadella.
“The Day of the Lamb” which is the Sunday before
St Johns Day marks the celebration week (16-26/6/08)
where the roads are blocked off and the impeccably
dressed noblemen and horsemen take part in the
cavalcade, the display includes more than 100 riders
who re-enact equestrian traditions with a packed
programme of jousting and horse acrobatics.
Following the cavalcade to the Pla de Sant Joan, a
“Caixer mass” takes place at the cathedral, and
then in the afternoon the games take place in Es Pla,
in which horsemen compete for a number of titles,
which in turn carry noble responsibilities.
The partying continues all week and the
procession is certainly worth a visit, but get there
early!
Nearby
holiday resorts include Cala Blanes, Cala Blanca,
Cala'n Forcat.
