It’s Raining Again!
The 48mm (2”) of rainfall that
fell overnight on 7th August 2009 in
Cambridgeshire is a mere drop in the ocean compared
to the UK history of heavy rain. Only last month
(July 2009) we saw the Buckingham Palace garden
party wiped out with 105mm (4”) of rain over a 3
hour period.
But we have to cast our
thoughts back to 2007 to look at record rainfall,
from May – July 387mm (15”) of rain fell making it
the wettest Summer since records began in 1766.
However for serious rain it was
in 1980 that the tiny French island of La Reunion,
settled in the south Indian Ocean just east of
Madagascar, recorded a staggering 3.93metres (12.9
feet) of rainfall during a tropical cyclone – Now
that is RAIN!
The Mediterranean cannot
guarantee being a “Rain free” zone but you are far
more likely to need a sun brolly than an umbrella
over there in the next few months.
