Holidaymakers traveling to the
Algarve should not miss out on the local speciality
served in all the restaurants, chicken piri piri.
The dish originates from
Mozambique (once a Portuguese colony) and is basically
small pieces of chicken marinated in a chile pepper
marinade (choices of med or hot) and then grilled.
This is served with lashings of tomato and
onion salad with a herb dressing and a plate of French
fries.
All to be washed down with a
chilled bottle of Vinho Verde, the local Portuguese
wine.
You will be expected to linger
over your supper and pick it up and nibble the chicken
with your fingers, and what is more all of this will
set you back as little as €6 pp!
Most of the restaurants will also
serve you their “cover” which includes fresh
bread, local cheese, butter and the very tasty local
sardine paste, this will cost around an extra €1.5
pp!
You will have no room left for
dessert!
The village of Guia, just West of
Albufeira , specialises in restaurants purely serving
chicken piri piri.
