One of the joys of holidaying
in Menorca and Mallorca and staying in a villa is
that you have the freedom to venture out and try
some of the many first class restaurants on the
islands. All tastes are catered for from top of the
range fish establishments to the local tapas bars
offer huge ranges of delicious delicacies.
Mallorca cuisine is basically
based on pork, fish and vegetable with generous use
of olive oil and garlic, with a particularly
favourite dish being sausages. These come in many
varieties including sobrasada (with hot red pepper)
botifarro , jamon Serrano and chorizo. Other items
regularly featured on the menu are Tumbet which is a
mallorca style ratatouille and Llom amb col which is
pork wrapped in cabbage with pine nuts.
Fresh seafood is plentiful in
both Mallorca and Menorca and this is coupled with
dairy products in Menorca which is famous for it’s
Mahon cheese (and gin!) The cheese is produced to
strict standards and is square in shape with an oily
yellow rind, it comes in a variety of flavours
depending on maturity. The island of Menorca is
famed for it’s lobster stew, “caldereta de llagosta”,
it is said that King Juan Carlos travels from
Mallorca to Fornells just to eat the excellent
stew! The locals have a very sweet tooth and hence
produce an array of desserts and pastries, do try
the almond macarrons or an ensaimada – a fluffy
spiral pastry. Finally the ice creams on both
islands are without doubt some of the tastiest in
the world! And not a mention of paella!
