BEQUIA – Surrounded next to the better-known island of Mustique, in the heart of the Grenadines, Bequia is an island which is a few decades behind in terms of technology and pace of life, yet its people have achieved a social balance from which we can all learn a few lessons. The people are a revelation – completely untainted by the worst flaws of so-called modern living, they and their children exude such genuine warmth and are so naturally friendly and smiling that, from the very first encounter, the discerning traveller cannot fail to be profoundly impressed. Bequia is 13 square miles of unspoiled Caribbean paradise. If you’re looking for a hectic night-life, pleased don’t come to Bequia. If you’re looking for peace, tranquillity, good food, beaches with coconut palms, an atmosphere of calm and friendly people, read on. In 1962 Princess Margaret, honeymooning on the royal yacht, dived overboard for a swim. Thereafter, on the Bequia’s major 5 beaches became known as princess Margaret Beach. This is the Caribbean paradise so often sought but less frequently found. Bequia welcomes royalty, and the very famous, far more discreetly than better-known islands. Some come to seek the mesmerising and luxuriant powers of the island to unwind from the intense strain of constantly being in the public eye. Others pop over by boat for an evening meal in on of the island’s outstanding restaurants – one famous singer at least, has found satisfaction here! |
